Being one of the Seven Sisters of North East India, Sikkim is the second smallest state in India. Nestling in the Himalayan mountains the state exhibit a diverse range of fauna and flora. With an elevation ranging from 280 metres (920 ft) in the south at border with West Bengal to 8,586 metres (28,169 ft) in northern peaks near Nepal and Tibet, the state shares its borders with China, Bhutan and Nepal. Zero Point which means the hindmost frontier of civilization in Sikkim or Yumesamdong is one such amazing place to experience in this North-Eastern State.
Standing at an elevation of 15,300 feet above mean sea level, this place is an amazing work of nature and has impeccable beauty. There is no motorable road after this place and the visitors are not permitted to go further beyond this point due to its proximity to the Chinese border. It is around 26 km away from Yumthang Valley and takes about one hour to reach here. It is, in fact, the last part of Yumthang; popularly known as the Valley of Flowers because of its rich meadows and fragrant breeze.
Driving through rugged mountainous roads amidst the rocky terrain is an adventure in itself and requires some additional skill and courage as it is highly treacherous. The route leading to Yumesamdong passes through the beautiful mountains. The colourful bushes of Azalea flowers welcomes the visitors with the subtle aroma pervading the entire atmosphere. Azalea also frames a major source of income to local people. They make the crude material out of which neighborhood people make incense sticks for their religious activities.
Zero Point is a prime tourist destination in Sikkim and the spectacle of the yaks grazing in the snow is something not to be missed. The majestic natural beauty of the place welcomes thousands of visitors each year. It is a perfect place for those who wants to immerse in the stillness of nature. The exotic splendour of this place is enough to keep you engrossed in its charm.
Yumesamdong is nothing short of Heaven on earth and remains snow loaded consistently. The landscape begins to change with the melting of the snow transforming the entire place into a beautiful meadow. It is now the grazing ground for the nomadic shepherds. Blue sheep are also spotted sometimes grazing around the place.
Tea, pakora and momos are the only refreshments sold by vendors who travel all the way from Lachung every day. Tourists can be easily seen enjoying the taste of steaming hot tea and momos to keep away the cold at that altitude.
